Bosnia and Herzegovina officially applied to join SEPA

The Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina (CBBH) announced that the country’s application to join the SEPA geographical scope has been formally submitted.
What happened?
- On 6 August 2026 the CBBH announced that the SEPA integration process it has led for two years reached the application stage. The file is now being considered by the European Payments Council (EPC) and other European bodies; the process includes detailed analysis, possible requests for clarifications, and a final admission decision.
- According to the CBBH, even after a positive decision, technical and operational preparations are required: the first SEPA transactions are expected no earlier than 6 months after admission. Commercial banks will need to align their systems with SEPA standards and adhere to the schemes individually.
- Shortly before this step, on 28 July 2026, key financial laws for SEPA were adopted in both Entities (CBBH announcement).
What does it mean?
- Application ≠ membership. Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently not within the SEPA scope; the SEPA country count is unchanged. No timetable for the admission decision has been announced.
- According to World Bank estimates cited by the CBBH, annual fee savings could reach around €100 million if admitted; in Western Balkan countries already in SEPA, fees for some international payments fell by 50–94%. These are outcomes observed in those countries — not a guarantee for every country or bank.
From Türkiye’s perspective
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s process is one step ahead of the path Türkiye is following: Türkiye submitted a letter of intent on 2 July 2026, while Bosnia and Herzegovina has now moved to a formal application. In Serbia’s case, roughly a year passed between inclusion in the scope and banks actually going live — expecting an immediate start after admission is unrealistic for either country.
